John Lennon.
Sad, but true. People always look at the music industry thinking ‘look at the mess it’s in’, when really, the music industry isn’t in a mess at all - it’s the record industry.
You don’t often see an artist claiming copyright or theft, it’s the label that “owns” the track doing the suing.
In an age where people spend more time on the internet than they do interacting with people in real life social situations, it’s a bit naive not to try and embrace the technology - why would you go out and buy a physical CD when you have a permanently flawless mp3 at your finger tips?
A lot bands are embracing this “iGeneration” as MC Lars would call it.
MusicGlue is a website that allows artists to do exactly that. In exchange for your e-mail address [where you will receive information on upcoming releases and tours] you can download a number of free tracks by the artists that are part of the site.
Canterbury have offered their entire album through this website for free. You can donate directly to the band as well, by putting more than £1 towards the album, or you can buy a physical copy of the CD.
Have fun, spread the word and remember music belongs to everyone, it’s an art form.
Peace out.
[p.s. I’m not promoting ‘stealing’ per se. I think in an ideal world, all releases should be like Canterbury’s]
